Museums of Ahmedabad City

The 27 Museums across Ahmedabad City are a gateway to the city's identity: its culture and heritage. Two of these museums: Kite Museum and City Museum of Ahmedabad: Karnavati Atit ni Jhanki are housed in Sanskar Kendra, a building designed by the internationally renowned French Architect, Le Corbusier. Both these Museums are governed by Amdavad Municipal Corporation.

Kite Museum

Kite flying festival, also known as Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti is one of the most awaited festivals in India, especially in Gujarat; the passion transcends the barriers of caste, creed, age and sex mainly in the cities of Ahmedabad, Baroda and Surat. Though the festival is celebrated on the 14th of January every year, the season begins around Christmas and comes to a climax on Makar Sankranti in January.

This museum is the first Kite museum in the Country and the second in the World. It is the brainchild of Shri Bhanubhai Shah who donated his valuable collection of kites to Amdavad Municipal Corporation. This collection that gradually grew in range and repertoire is today showcased in the museum accompanied with interesting illustrations and photographs. The museum was inaugurated on 27th February, 1986 at the famous building- Sanskar Kendra which was designed by the father of modern architecture, Le Corbusier.

The museum houses over 100 kites of from all over India. The varieties and patterns of the kites range from geometric designs to designs/motifs of trees, fruits, animals and birds, even human beings. These designs are not painted but made up of tiny pieces of paper meticulously glued together. The information offered by the museum is well researched from period 200 BC to 1985 AD.
