Government of India has launched a JnNURM scheme for transformation of cities under which Government of India, Government of Gujarat, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have undertaken a project to build a dedicated BRTS corridor in city having heavy traffic on public road to give a prominent identity to Ahmedabad City. Engineering Department of BRTS is developing different infrastructures of BRTS namely BRT Corridor, Mix Traffic Lanes, Pedestrian Footpaths for Pedestrian, Bus Shelters, Bus Workshops, Bus Depot etc.The project is planned to develop into three phases out of which two phases are completed and made operational while third phase is also planned and DPR is approved by Government of Gujarat. At present, BRTS bus service which was started from RTO to Chandranagar (12.5 km), now covers heavy traffic areas like railway station, educational institutions, and industrial areas in 86 k.m. operational route. There are currently total 127 bus stations are operational.

• To identify the feasibilities of BRT Routes in such a way that maximum citizens can use the public transportation services.
• To facilitate passengers using BRT Buses.
• To facilitate senior citizens, physically disabled and handicapped people for using Public Transportation Service smoothly.
• To appoint Planning & Designing Consultants for designing the BRT Corridor and Stretch.
• To appoint the Project Monitoring Consultant for Supervision, Quality Assurance, Quality Control & Certification of Billing.
• To co-ordinate with different departments of State Government & Central Government.
• To Co-ordinate with different other agencies like Power Supply, Gas Supply, Telecommunication etc.
• To get necessary sanction from competent authority for finalizing the route, design, tenders, estimates etc.
• To get the final bills audited with Audit Department.
• Overall monitoring of ongoing works under BRTS.

In different part of Ahmedabad City, Corridors are decided and developed in a manner that maximum citizens can utilize the BRT Bus Services from their origin to destination on day to day basis. Corridors are well developed and well connected with Railways, State Transportation stations, Industrial Areas, Commercial Areas, educational areas and Residential Areas. The corridors as well as the Bus Shelters are designed & constructed in such way that people of different ages can use and travel BRT Bus Services safely and smoothly. As a part of better pedestrian facility, wide footpaths are constructed. At present some of the junctions are identified and it is under planning to construct the Foot Over Bridge at One Junction on PPP Basis for easy crossing of junctions and entry and exit from BRT Bus Shelters. On roads with very wide Right of Way, separate cycle tracks are constructed.

Following projects are undertaken by BRTS Department.

• Development of BRTS Corridors: This includes BRT in median, mix traffic lanes, cycle track, footpath for pedestrians, signalized traffic junctions, signage, road marking paints, on street parking, etc.
• Construction, Fabrication & Erection of BRT Bus Shelters: The bus shelter is designed and constructed to facilitate and to give ease to the passengers. The platform level of Bus Shelter and Bus is kept same for easy entry and exit of passengers as well as physically disable and handicapped people. Special type of flooring which includes tac liner and tac button type is fixed in the station platform to guide blind people. A ramp is provided for easy access towards bus shelter for senior citizens as well as physically handicapped people. Automatic Doors with RFID System are installed in the BRT Bus Shelters.
• Construction of BRT Workshop: For major and minor repairing, denting, painting, filling fuel day to day cleaning and maintain the BRT Buses, a workshop is constructed in Narol area. Another workshop is under construction in Odhav Area.
• Construction of BRT Depot: To park the BRT Buses during night time parking facilities are also constructed by BRTS Department. At present Depots are constructed at Narol, Ranip area. Another depot is under construction in Ranip Area.

• "Momentum for Change" an International Award for the category of 2012 Light House Activities to Ahmedabad Bus Rapid Transit System Janmarg by United Nations at Doha on dated 05-12-2012.
• Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited -AJL has won one award at 60thUITP World Congress, Geneva on 27thMay, 2013. AJL-AMC have received award in the category of 'UITP India Political Commitment Award'. This award was given by Mr. Peter Hendy, President Elect UITP, in the presence of other UITP delegates from all over the world and delegates from India.
• AJL has received "MARKENOMY Awards 2013" in the category of "Best Urban Infra Mass Transport Project in India" on 26th September 2013 organized by Falcon Media, an enterprise of Enertia Foundation at Juhu Club Millennium, Mumbai.
